Millions of viewers in Europe and across the globe tuning into this year’s Eurovision song contest will spot the colourful branding designed by a former University of Glamorgan student and teacher. Gareth Mapp, is the Executive Creative Director of Turquoise Branding and his London-based agency were invited to design the brand identity for the 2012 music contest held in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is the second year running Gareth and his team have been commissioned to brand the musical event. Gareth said: “As you can imagine, last year we were thrilled to see our visual identity being beamed to over 125 million viewers across Europe and beyond. And to get the opportunity to do it for a second year is just fantastic. The theme, ‘The Land of Fire’, provided us with the inspiration for the identity.” Gareth studied on the one year Foundation Art & Design course at the Treforest campus before progressing to a three year degree course in Bath. He then returned to teaching design as a staff member at University of Glamorgan. He said: “Studying foundation Art and Design at Glamorgan and then later teaching on the Design course, was the starting point of my career. The course opened my eyes to the fabulous possibilities within the design industry. “I have since gone on to create Brand identities for major global Broadcasting and Telecommunications organisations. “The work I have created has been seen and experienced by literally hundreds of millions of people around the world over the years; which to be honest is quite humbling”. He added: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Glamorgan and would wholly recommend the courses for any future student thinking about art and design as a career”.
